5.3 LS Stage 3 Performance Build Features
A stock 5.3 LS makes between 270 and 355 horsepower depending on the generation. That works fine for a factory replacement. However, if your build needs real performance, a stock engine is the wrong starting point.
This Stage 3 build takes the 5.3 LS well beyond factory specification. It runs a BTR camshaft, Gen 4 rods and pistons, LS7 lifters, ported 243 heads, and a full ARP and Melling supporting package. As a result, you get a genuinely engineered combination rather than a stock unit with a few bolt-ons.
At 53LSEngine.com, every Stage 3 build ships with a full specification sheet so you know exactly what is inside.

Why These Specific Components
Each part in this build was chosen for a reason. Here is what each one brings to the combination.
BTR Camshaft
Brian Tooley Racing has one of the strongest reputations in the LS camshaft market. The BTR grind in this build targets a usable street power band rather than peak dyno numbers alone. Consequently, the engine pulls hard where you actually drive it.
Gen 4 Rods and Pistons
Gen 4 connecting rods are meaningfully stronger than early Gen 3 units. Combined with matched pistons, they handle the RPM and cylinder pressure that a performance camshaft creates. Because the bottom end is no longer the limiting factor, the cam and heads can do their job.
LS7 Lifters
LS7 lifters are the upgrade path for any AFM-equipped 5.3 LS. They eliminate the AFM hardware entirely, which removes the documented lifter wear failure mode. In addition, they hold up better under the higher spring pressures a performance camshaft demands.
243 Cylinder Heads
The 243 casting comes from the LS6 and is widely regarded as the best cathedral port head GM produced. It flows significantly more than a stock 5.3 truck head. Therefore, it lets the camshaft reach its potential rather than choking on head flow.
ARP Main Studs
ARP main studs clamp the main caps more consistently than factory bolts. That keeps main bore geometry stable under load, which protects your bearings and your crankshaft.
Melling High Pressure Oil Pump
A performance engine at higher RPM demands more oil volume and pressure than a stock pump delivers. The Melling high pressure unit covers that requirement.
MLS Head Gaskets
Multi-layer steel gaskets seal reliably at the higher cylinder pressures a performance build creates. Standard composite gaskets can fail under those conditions.
LS1 Intake and 92mm Throttle Body
The LS1 intake flows considerably better than a stock truck intake at higher RPM. The 92mm throttle body then matches that flow capacity so the throttle body does not become the restriction.
42 lb Injectors
Injectors have to match the engine’s fuel demand at full output. Undersized injectors run the engine lean at wide-open throttle, and that damages pistons quickly. The 42 lb units cover this build’s requirement.
Low Profile Oil Pan with Oil Cooler Adapter
The low profile pan improves clearance in swap chassis where the factory truck pan does not fit. The built-in oil cooler adapter then lets you run an external cooler without additional adapters.
LS3 Water Pump
The LS3 pump moves more coolant than earlier LS pumps. Because a performance engine generates more heat, that additional flow matters.

Who Should Buy a Stage 3 Build
This build suits specific types of projects.
Swap builders dropping an LS into a classic Camaro, Chevelle, Nova, or C10 who want performance from the start. The low profile oil pan helps considerably here.
Restomod projects where the vehicle needs modern performance to match its appearance and build quality.
Track and autocross cars that need an engine capable of sustained hard use rather than a stock unit pushed past its design.
Buyers upgrading from a stock replacement who already ran a stock 5.3 LS and want meaningfully more from the next one.
If you need a factory replacement instead, our used 5.3 LS engines cover that application at a lower price point.
Supporting Systems You Will Need
The Stage 3 build is not a bolt-in stock replacement. Plan these systems before the engine arrives.
ECU and Tune
The BTR camshaft changes the airflow and fuel requirements completely. A stock factory tune cannot manage that. Therefore, budget for a professional tune from a shop experienced with LS performance applications.
Fuel System
The 42 lb injectors need a fuel pump, lines, and regulator that support their flow demand. Confirm your fuel system capacity before the engine arrives.
Exhaust
The 243 heads and BTR camshaft flow significantly more air than stock. Because of that, restrictive factory exhaust caps your output. You need performance headers and a free-flowing system.
Cooling System
The LS3 water pump helps, but you still need a radiator sized for the power level. A stock replacement radiator will not keep up under sustained hard driving.
Oil Cooler
The pan includes an oil cooler adapter. If your build sees track use or sustained high load, running an external cooler is worth doing.
Build Documentation
Every Stage 3 build ships with a full specification sheet. Your tuner needs that information, and you deserve to know exactly what you paid for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Build and Component Questions
What camshaft is in the Stage 3 build?
A BTR performance grind from Brian Tooley Racing. Contact us at +1 (216) 230-5433 for the specific lift, duration, and LSA on the current build.
What cylinder heads does it use?
243 castings, which come from the LS6. They flow considerably more than stock 5.3 truck heads and are widely considered the best cathedral port head GM produced.
Why LS7 lifters?
LS7 lifters eliminate AFM hardware entirely, which removes the documented AFM lifter wear failure mode. In addition, they handle the higher spring pressures a performance camshaft demands.
Does the build include an oil cooler?
The low profile oil pan includes an oil cooler adapter. However, the cooler itself and the lines are not included. Contact us if you want those added.
Installation Questions
Is the Stage 3 build street driveable?
Yes. The BTR cam targets a usable street power band rather than peak numbers alone. However, it needs a matched tune, a fuel system that supports 42 lb injectors, and performance exhaust to run correctly.
Do I need a tune?
Yes. The camshaft and induction changes require a calibration built for the combination. Budget for a professional tune as part of your build cost.
Will the low profile pan fit my chassis?
The low profile pan improves clearance considerably over the factory truck pan. Nevertheless, confirm your specific chassis clearance with us before ordering.
Ordering and Shipping Questions
How much power does it make?
Output depends on your supporting systems, exhaust, and tune. Contact us at +1 (216) 230-5433 for the current Stage 3 output figures.
